Private label pet food packaging protects the product from oxygen, moisture, light, handling and transportation. It also communicates the brand identity and carries important product and regulatory information.
The correct packaging should be selected according to the formula, fat level, shelf-life target, package size, distribution conditions and destination-market labeling rules—not appearance alone.
1. What pet food package sizes can be customized?
Pet food package sizes can be customized according to the product, feeding rate, retail channel, and packaging-supplier requirements. Options may range from small trial packs to larger breeder or wholesale bags.
Each size may require a separate artwork file and packaging MOQ. Buyers should confirm the filling volume, bag dimensions, heat-seal area, storage needs and carton or pallet arrangement before ordering printed packaging.
2. What packaging material is suitable for dry pet food?
Dry pet food normally requires a laminated material with suitable resistance to oxygen, moisture, light, puncture and seal failure. The correct structure depends on the product’s fat content, shelf-life target, bag size and transportation conditions.
Buyers should evaluate barrier performance, seal strength and completed-bag testing when available. The number of film layers or material thickness alone does not prove that a bag will protect the product effectively.
3. Does ordinary dry pet food need a one-way valve?
Ordinary dry pet food generally does not need a one-way valve when it has been fully cooled before packaging. Unlike freshly roasted coffee, normal extruded pet food does not continuously release large amounts of gas.
If bags swell, the manufacturer should investigate product temperature, moisture, microbiology, and sealing conditions. A valve adds cost and another potential sealing point, and it should not be used to hide a production or storage problem.
4. What packaging is recommended for high-fat dry pet food?
High-fat dry pet food needs stronger protection against oxygen, light and seal failure because its fats can oxidize during storage. A suitable system may combine high-barrier laminate, effective antioxidants, controlled storage and nitrogen flushing when technically justified.
Packaging evaluation should consider oxygen transmission, moisture transmission, residual oxygen and seal integrity. A one-way valve does not prevent oxidation and cannot replace a complete shelf-life protection system.
5. Should a pet food bag include a zipper?
A zipper is useful for smaller retail bags that consumers open and close repeatedly. It can improve convenience and help reduce exposure after opening when the bag is properly resealed.
Large bags may benefit more from reinforced seals, handles or practical dispensing features. The zipper position must not reduce the effective heat-seal area. The finished bag should be tested during filling, stacking, transport and repeated use.
6. What information should appear on a private label pet food package?
Required information varies by destination market. It may include the product name, intended species or life stage, ingredient list, nutritional declaration, feeding guide, net weight, batch code, production or expiry date, storage instructions and manufacturer or importer details.
Claims such as “grain-free,” “hypoallergenic” or “complete and balanced” must be supported and legally permitted. The brand owner or importer should arrange final local review before printing.
7. Who approves the packaging artwork and legal text?
The manufacturer can provide formula information, nutritional data, package dimensions, date-code areas and production details. The brand owner is responsible for approving the final artwork, trademarks, claims, language and market-specific legal text.
Packaging should not be printed until the formula, net weight, barcode, importer information and destination-market requirements are confirmed. Late changes can delay production or make completed bags unusable. Review the related requirements in our Private Label Pet Food Manufacturing Guide.
