Custom Pet Food Formula and Nutrition: 7 Common Questions

A custom pet food formula must balance nutrition, digestibility, palatability, processing performance, shelf stability and target cost. A higher protein or fat percentage does not automatically mean a better product.

Pet Secret Biotechnology Co., Ltd. offers more than 30 commercially used dog and cat food formulas. Buyers can select an existing formula, adjust nutritional targets or develop a customized product for a defined market.

1. Can protein and fat levels be customized?

Yes. Protein and fat targets can be adjusted according to the species, life stage, activity level, product position and target price.

Higher values are not automatically better. A suitable formula must also consider amino-acid balance, digestibility, energy density, ingredient quality and processing limits. Very high-fat dry food may require special coating, antioxidant protection and high-barrier packaging.

2. Can a formula use selected animal-protein sources?

Yes. A custom pet food formula can use selected chicken, duck, pigeon, rabbit, fish or other available animal-protein sources.

The final selection depends on supply stability, nutritional value, processing performance, cost and destination-market restrictions. Pet Secret Biotechnology operates its own poultry and pigeon resources, which support the traceability and control of selected raw materials. Learn more about our Farm-to-Bowl supply chain.

3. Can Pet Secret develop grain-free pet food?

Yes. Grain-free dog or cat food can be developed when it suits the target market and product position.

The replacement starch and fiber sources must still support nutrition, kibble formation, digestibility, palatability and production stability. “Grain-free” is a formulation and labeling choice, not automatic proof of better quality. Any grain-free claim must accurately match the ingredients and local labeling rules.

4. What is enzymatic hydrolysis in pet food?

Enzymatic hydrolysis uses controlled enzymes to break larger proteins into smaller peptides and amino-acid fragments. The result depends on the protein source, enzyme type, dosage, temperature and reaction time.

Pet Secret Biotechnology uses a Siemens-controlled system for selected hydrolyzed applications. Accurate process control supports more consistent hydrolysis and product performance. Read our Enzymatic Hydrolysis in Pet Food Guide.

5. Does hydrolyzed protein make pet food hypoallergenic?

Not automatically. Hydrolyzed protein may help reduce exposure to certain intact proteins, but the result depends on the original protein, degree of hydrolysis, formula design and cross-contact controls.

A product should not be described as hypoallergenic only because it contains a hydrolyzed ingredient. Any allergy-related claim requires suitable formulation evidence, testing and compliance with the destination market’s advertising and labeling requirements.

6. Can a formula be developed toward AAFCO or FEDIAF guidance?

Yes. A formula can be developed toward relevant AAFCO or FEDIAF nutritional profiles when appropriate for the product, life stage and destination market.

These organizations provide nutritional guidance; they do not normally certify individual factories or guarantee legal market approval. Ingredients, finished-product tests, labels, registration and importer requirements must still comply with local regulations. Avoid describing a manufacturer as “AAFCO certified.”

7. How is a custom pet food formula approved?

Formula approval should use a written product specification rather than relying only on a sample’s appearance. The specification may cover ingredients, nutritional targets, kibble size, moisture, tolerances, testing requirements, packaging and shelf-life expectations.

After technical review and any required pilot production, the buyer approves the final formula and specification. Later changes should follow a documented approval procedure before commercial production.
